The Advising Project (TAP) offers a series of research-based workshops designed to help faculty and students make the most of their advising relationships. Advising is a critical aspect of student success in graduate school, and effective advising depends on the active, intentional engagement of both advisor and advisee. TAP workshops provide attendees with skills and strategies that will foster this active engagement and promote strong advising relationships across Harvard Griffin GSAS.
Please reach out to us to schedule a workshop for your department or program. Our programming can be adapted based on the needs and interests of your community.
TAP for Faculty
TAP programming provides space for faculty to further develop their advising skillset. Workshops are designed to meet faculty “where they are” and provide helpful tools and resources that each advisor can adapt based on their own personality, advising style, and schedule. Participation in one or more workshops will help faculty save time and avoid common advising conflicts by establishing an effective foundation for their advising relationships. We offer sessions ranging from drop-in office hours and one-hour workshops to immersive programming that takes place across two full days.

TAP for Students
While TAP is primarily focused on faculty support, the TAP team is available on a case-by-case basis to facilitate workshops that introduce students to key strategies for establishing a productive relationship with their faculty advisor. Through group activities and discussions, students will develop a better understanding of their own advising goals and needs, allowing them to cultivate the support they require to thrive in graduate school and beyond. Workshop topics include choosing a faculty advisor, communication skills, sharing expectations, and gaining independence as a scholar, among others. Our curriculum is centered on four two-hour sessions that can be adapted to fit specific program needs.
