Is There Life in the Solar System?

Research at Risk: Since World War II, universities have worked with the federal government to create an innovation ecosystem that has yielded life-changing progress. Now much of that work may be halted as funding is withdrawn. Find out more about the threats to medical, engineering, and scientific research, as well as how Harvard is fighting to preserve this workand the University's core values.

PhD candidate Jonah Peter was a member of the team that found one of the potential building blocks of life—hydrogen cyanide—on Saturn’s moon, Enceladus. Crucial for forming essential amino acids and RNA precursors, hydrogen cyanide can provide important clues for understanding life beyond—and on—Earth. Drawing parallels with the transformative impact of the Apollo spaceflight program, Peter explains his team’s recent discoveries and how this work ultimately helps put into context humanity’s place in the universe.
