Perfume and Progress: Illuminating the Science of Scent

PhD student Kathy Liu blends her interest in material science with a passion for outreach—and for bringing women into fields traditionally dominated by male practitioners. Using the chemistry of perfume as an entry point, Kathy educates and engages her fellow students through workshops that reveal the science behind fragrance formulations. Her efforts not only demystify perfumery but also empower others to explore and appreciate the scientific underpinnings of everyday beauty products. By bridging the gap between science and craft, Kathy fosters a community where creativity intersects with rigorous inquiry, inspiring others to see science as accessible, engaging, and relevant to their lives.
