THOMAS M. MERTENS, PhD ’09, economics, serves as senior vice president and associate director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and lectures at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. In his role at the Fed, he conducts research on financial markets and monetary economics, is part of the senior management of the research team, and provides input into the monetary policy process. He was previously a full-time faculty member at New York University’s Stern School of Business and taught at the Wharton School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and in the economics department at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his undergraduate diploma in mathematics from the University of Bonn.

Mertens is passionate about table tennis, having been a competitive player and coach. During his time in New York City, he coached the New York University men’s and women’s table tennis teams. Mertens resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and son.
