Michael E. Steiper

MICHAEL E. STEIPER, AM ’00, PhD ’03, anthropology, is president of SUNY Purchase. A first-generation college graduate, Steiper is an energetic, student-centered leader dedicated to advancing access and excellence in public higher education. He previously served as provost at the College of Staten Island, CUNY, and held faculty and leadership roles at Hunter College, CUNY, where he was the inaugural director of the Human Biology Program, now one of the college’s largest majors. A biological anthropologist, his research has appeared in leading scientific journals and has been covered by The New York Times. Steiper earned his bachelor's degree from New York University. He plays electric bass in his spare time and lives with his family in Westchester County, New York.
