This special edition of the magazine showcases the research of Harvard Griffin GSAS alumni related to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the birth of modern democracy. The issue leads off with a tribute to alumnus and Centennial medalist Gordon Wood, who passed away in early June after a 60-year career that fundamentally changed the way scholars understand the country’s origins and early history. I do hope you have an opportunity to read it.

Even as we look to the past, I am excited about the knowledge being created by the School’s newest PhD and master’s graduated, whom I honored alongside my faculty and staff colleagues in Sanders Theatre this past May. As I shared from the stage, our world needs graduates just like them—and alumni like you—to navigate the many opportunities, uncertainties, and challenges ahead: scholars and scientists informed by meticulous research, unfazed by the unknown, undeterred by roadblocks, and comfortable with complexity and ambiguity. We looking forward to sharing the stories of what they accomplish in the years to come.

As always, thank you for your support of Harvard Griffin GSAS.
