What should I do when I first arrive?
Report to the Harvard International Office (HIO), located on the 8th floor of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center, with your passport and visa documents, where you will be asked to complete a registration form. The HIO staff will be on hand to provide information about orienting yourself to Harvard and to the Boston/Cambridge area and will offer advice on where and how to find appropriate housing. You can also access their helpful student guide.
Which orientation programs should I attend?
In addition to the events run by academic departments, GSAS offers several orientation events you are strongly encouraged to attend:
International Student Reception
International Student Orientation
Orientation for Incoming Students
Morning ceremonies provide essential information for graduate students followed by a luncheon for you and members of your department. Following the Orientation Luncheon, students can attend workshops, visit a resource fair, and learn about student groups. The afternoon ends with the Graduate School Alumni Association Social Hour outside Dudley House.
I didn't sign up for Host-Student Program. May I still attend the dinner?
The Host Student Program, which pairs current GSAS students with incoming international students, begins with an opening dinner on Monday, August 21, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in Dudley House. You may still participate in the program and attend the opening dinner if you submit an online application before July 31, 2017 (please e-mail Dudley House administrator Susan Zawalich to let her know that you wish to participate). Due to space constraints, please do not come to the dinner without having first signed up.
I’m not very confident about my English skills, where can I get some help?
English as a Second Language (ESL) courses may be useful to some students. E-mail Patrick O'Brien, assistant dean of student affairs, or call 617-495-1814, for more information.
