The goals of Harvard Graduate Students in Linguistics (HGSL) are twofold: primarily, we strive to create an environment conducive to community building, by organizing social events (for example, the ongoing departmental Happy Hour), and implementing various community-building projects within our community (for example, the yearly Summer Photo Contest). Secondly, we aim to provide opportunities for graduate students to acquire practical skills pertinent to our field of study, specifically those not otherwise offered by the department or GSAS. We do so by organizing workshops on specific topics, based on suggestions from the student body, led by members of the HGSL executive committee and fellow graduate student volunteers. For example, we organized a two-session workshop titled: “Praat for Linggrads,” which taught students how to use software that is useful for various linguistic studies.
