The University's COVID-19 guidance for on-campus activities continues to be adjusted and many of the restrictions put in place over the past two years have been lifted with limited exceptions. As you plan to attend Commencement festivities, we expect that you and your guests will read all upcoming communications from GSAS and the University to ensure you are up to date on the current policies, and generally understand that protocols are subject to change to align with public health guidance. Commencement for the Classes of 2020 & 2021 Schedule

Division of Medical Sciences Hooding Ceremony, Friday, May 27, 2022

10:15 a.m. The Division of Medical Sciences will host a hooding ceremony for 2020 and 2021 graduates. 
Additional registration with program required.

GSAS Dean's Reception, Saturday, May 28, 2022

4:00 p.m5:30 p.m. Dean Emma Dench will host a reception for 2020 and 2021 graduates and their guests, GSAS Commons, GSAS Student Center.

Commencement for the Classes of 2020 & 2021, Sunday, May 29, 2022

(Times are approximate, subject to change, and may overlap.)

6:00 a.m. Harvard Yard gates open for all guests.

6:00 a.m. All degree candidates gather in front of Pierce Hall, 29 Oxford Street.

6:15 a.m. GSAS parades down Oxford Street.

7:00 a.m. Graduates line up for the academic procession.

7:35 a.m. Classes of 2020 and 2021 begin processions into Tercentenary Theatre.

8:00 a.m. Morning Exercises of Commencement begin in Harvard Yard. Morning Exercises include student orations, conferral of all degrees (not diploma distribution), the principal speaker Merrick Garland AB ’74, JD ’77, and presentation of Honorary Degrees.

10:30 a.m GSAS Brunch Reception begins immediately following the Morning Exercises on the Lawns at Richards Hall, behind Perkins Hall, 33–35 Oxford Street, and continues until approximately 12:00 p.m. for all graduates and their guests. Each student may request three guest tickets.

Regalia Ordering

The University is committed to a ceremony with the pomp and circumstance of a traditional Commencement, including a processional during which graduates will be expected to wear the appropriate regalia. For those who need regalia, it can be ordered directly from the Harvard Coop website. All regalia orders must be placed by April 9, 2022.

Visas

Some international alumni who are no longer in the United States (US), may need to apply for a US tourist visa to enter the US to attend Commencement on Sunday, May 29, 2022. International alumni who received a degree in 2020 (November 2019, March 2020, or May 2020) or in 2021 (November 2020, March 2021, or May 2021) may request an invitation letter to help facilitate the granting of a visa.

To request a letter, please email the GSAS Office of Student Affairs at least three weeks before your appointment with the embassy or consulate.

On May 27, 2021, Harvard University convened online for the Honoring the Harvard Class of 2021 virtual program and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences followed with a Graduation Recognition Ceremony where each participant's name was read and recognized.
