Scholarly Life

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, which awards the Harvard PhD, offers 55 degree programs, including interfaculty PhD programs with Harvard’s professional schools. PhD students may broaden their programs by enrolling in a growing number of secondary fields of study.

Commencement 2012

On a warm, clear Commencement Day — the 361st Harvard Commencement — the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences bestowed the PhD on 431 candidates and the master's degree on 79 candidates across 56 departments, programs, and divisions. The GSAS diploma awarding ceremony, whose traditions seem amplified by the august surroundings of Sanders Theatre, blended solemnity, pageantry, and moments of festivity and unexpected humor as graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas and the congratulations of deans and faculty.

At Morning Exercises in Harvard Yard, Jonathan Service, the first PhD candidate in memory to deliver the graduate oration, offered a soaring and inspirational speech grounded in the words of Japan's preeminent haiku poet, Basho. And later in the day Fareed Zakaria, PhD'93, government, delivered the Commencement address.
